Left unaddressed, that trapped moisture does real harm. It soaks the underside of the deck and the framing, and over time that constant dampness leads to wood rot, weakening the very structure the roof depends on. It saturates the attic insulation, which destroys its ability to insulate and drives up heating and cooling costs. What good ventilation actually looks like
Proper attic ventilation is not complicated in principle, but it has to be balanced to work. The idea is continuous airflow, with intake vents low at the eaves or soffits letting fresh air in, and exhaust vents high at the ridge letting the heated, moisture-laden air out. As the air in the attic warms, it rises and exits at the ridge, drawing cooler outside air in at the eaves, and the whole attic flushes itself continuously. The key word is balanced, because intake and exhaust have to be roughly matched. A roof with ridge exhaust but blocked or missing soffit intake cannot pull air through, and one with intake but no real exhaust path has nowhere to send it. Either imbalance leaves the system not really working.
